Working garden (picture examples from the Coach House Trust)
The landscaping and development of the land adjacent to the Lambhill stables building will provide a working garden where many workshops will be delivered. The garden programmes can begin whilst the construction work is taking place on the buildings. When the gardens are fully created, they will not only facilitate training programmes but also provide an interactive learning space where individuals and groups from the community can improve their knowledge of horticulture and general biodiversity of the area.
Maintenance of canal habitat & regeneration of this section of the canal will take place in keeping with canal strategy to make it more accessible to the community & improve amenity for canal users this will extend the area where programmes of training can take place. There will be access to the gardens available to the community when training is not taking place (mainly evenings and weekends). A balance must be struck between making amenity accessible for all to enjoy whilst protecting it from any potential abuse.
Recycling
It is proposed to create within the site, composting, vermiculture and centres for recycling other waste. The recycling points will be available for local residents to bring their household and garden waste to be recycled. The practice of recycling will be integrated into every programme that is being run in the centre whether that through using recycled products or simply ensuring that any waste that can be recycled is. The management of recycling will be a programme in itself for users, volunteers and trainees to be involved in.
In addition to the on site recycling points available to the community, Lambhill Stables will create and maintain recycling points throughout the community to compliment Glasgow City Council’s (GCC) backcourt recycling scheme. The Lambhill Stables will provide recycling for glass, kitchen and garden waste which is not currently collected by GCC.
Renewable test centre
The Stables building will provide opportunities for local people to gain awareness of energy production though use of a range of renewables built into the fabric of the refurbished building. These will include
- Geo thermal
- Passive solar
- Photo voltaic solar panels
- Biomass boiler – bio fuel traveling by canal boat (this will be the first to be installed)
- Wind turbine - using a triple helix model which has greater efficiency in urban areas
Academic research opportunities to examine the energy production and release will be developed with the aim of being an international centre for renewable energies knowledge. This will connect the centre with the most cutting edge renewables technology and opportunities to train local people in the production and management of renewables which will ensure they acquire skills in growth industries.
Café, Catering and Health Promotion Services
A restaurant and cafe on the ground floor of the building will provide:
- Healthy food & publicise healthy eating.
- Outside catering
- Cookery and diet classes.
Food and ingredients for the café, will be grown on-site at the Lambhill market gardens. The cafe, environmental projects, and the workspace/training facilities will also provide opportunities for work-placements in a variety of occupational areas: catering, landscaping/horticulture and administration.
Youth resource
Community learning opportunities, training courses and projects will be available to young people alongside adults. These opportunities will also be available at times suitable for those young people attending school as the centre will be open in the evenings. Other, less formal youth services will be delivered during evening opening times. Partnerships are currently being developed with local youth providers who have shown an interest in delivering youth services from the centre such as a drop in youth project. Other activities will be sports, arts and horticulturally based. and outdoor education. Their service delivery can be an enjoyable yet informative programme of activities that young people would be keen to be involved in.
